Did Angelina Buy Brad This House?
Massaro House (Part 2) | Architect: (Based on drawings by) Frank Lloyd Wright | (Heart-shaped) Petra Island, South Lake Blvd. Lake Mahopac, New York
In 1949, architect Frank Lloyd Wright was hired by engineer A. K. Chahroudi to build a house on his private 10-acre island. Chahroudi would later state that during a lunch meeting he had with Wright and Edgar Kaufmann, the owner of Wright’s celebrated Fallingwater, the architect told Kaufmann: “When I finish the house on the island, it will surpass your Fallingwater.”
Wright designed a one-story, 5,000-square-foot house for three months, when Chahroudi canned the project after realizing he couldn’t afford the $50,000 budget that Wright envisioned, nor a second more modest version requested of Wright. Instead, Wright designed a 1,200-square-foot cottage for Chahroudi.
Businessman Joseph Massaro acquired the island in 1996 for $700,000 and with it, the plans to a never-built Frank Lloyd Wright designed home. Massaro went on to build the house with an architect and Wright historian and on Nov. 25, 2013, various news sources reported the heart-shaped island and its buildings had been sold (allegedly) to Angelina Jolie as a 50th birthday present for her husband Brad Pitt.
Joseph Massaro is still listed as the owner and there is NO record of sale as of March 11, 2014.
